1 Os-prober is a spinoff of debian-installer.
2 One of the installer's features is that it can probe disks
3 on the system for other operating systems, and add them to
4 the boot loader, so that installing Debian doesn't make
5 your other installed OS hard to boot.
7 To do this it needs to both be able to find out what version
8 of what OS lives in a given partition (linux, windows, dos,
9 macos, the hurd, solaris, qnx, minix).
10 It also needs to work out how to boot existing installed
11 linux systems, and has to be able to detect what distribution
12 is installed, to add a better menu entry to grub than just "linux".
