al@19596 1 BusyBox combines tiny versions of many common UNIX utilities into a single
al@19596 2 small executable. It provides minimalist replacements for most of the utilities
al@19596 3 you usually find in bzip2, coreutils, dhcp, diffutils, e2fsprogs, file,
al@19596 4 findutils, gawk, grep, inetutils, less, modutils, net-tools, procps, sed,
al@19596 5 shadow, sysklogd, sysvinit, tar, util-linux, and vim. The utilities in BusyBox
al@19596 6 often have fewer options than their full-featured cousins; however, the options
al@19596 7 that are included provide the expected functionality and behave very much like
al@19596 8 their larger counterparts.
al@19596 9
al@19596 10 BusyBox has been written with size-optimization and limited resources in mind,
al@19596 11 both to produce small binaries and to reduce run-time memory usage. Busybox is
al@19596 12 also extremely modular so you can easily include or exclude commands (or
al@19596 13 features) at compile time. This makes it easy to customize embedded systems; to
al@19596 14 create a working system, just add /dev, /etc, and a Linux kernel. Busybox
al@19596 15 (usually together with uClibc) has also been used as a component of "thin
al@19596 16 client" desktop systems, live-CD distributions, rescue disks, installers, and
al@19596 17 so on.
al@19596 18
al@19596 19 BusyBox provides a fairly complete POSIX environment for any small system, both
al@19596 20 embedded environments and more full featured systems concerned about space.
al@19596 21 Busybox is slowly working towards implementing the full Single Unix
al@19596 22 Specification V3 (http://www.opengroup.org/onlinepubs/009695399/), but isn't
al@19596 23 there yet (and for size reasons will probably support at most UTF-8 for
al@19596 24 internationalization). We are also interested in passing the Linux Test Project
al@19596 25 (http://ltp.sourceforge.net).
